BASIC WORKSHOP
The workshop will focus on the casting of small
objects using cuttlefish bone molds.
We will start with some historical notions on this ancient technique
and its use in more recent times.
A demonstration of the traditional method of replication by impression will
follow, highlighting its basic points: the positioning of the model, the excavation
of gate, the use of vents etc.
At this point each student can prepare his own bone mold and cast it, so that
possible mistakes will be corrected and FAQs answered.
ADVANCED COURSE
Working with free-form carving will next be considered, along with more complex
techniques: the casting of sheet and tubing, of married metals, the inclusion
of stones and glass, the assembly of three-piece molds etc.
The results will range from fine precision replicas of a model to free form
shapes and controlled textural effects by the use of differently oriented
layers of the bone.
Advanced students may incorporate in their works stone setting, chasing, engraving,
etc.
